A striking East German Fat Lava ceramic vase dating from the 1970s.
Finished in a soft olive-green glaze, the vase features a dramatic band of textured volcanic decoration with vivid orange lava centres, creating a strong contrast between the organic form and the heavily textured surface.
Research suggests the vase was produced by the East German pottery manufacturer Strehla and retains its original export mark to the base. While Fat Lava pottery is often associated with West Germany, East German factories also produced and exported ceramics across Europe during the Cold War era, making pieces such as this an increasingly interesting part of post-war design history.
Sourced during a buying trip to Lisbon, Portugal.
A sculptural decorative object that works equally well displayed on its own or grouped with other mid-century ceramics.
