Edwardian Mahogany Steamer Chair

Description

Produced by the Civil Service Stores before the first world war, this ‘Stranvic’ folding steamer chair is made from solid mahogany with brass fixings.

The Civil Service Supply Association began in 1864 and moved to it’s new larger department store designed by architects Lockwood & Mawson in 1877. The building was completely rebuilt in 1927 in the Art Deco style and it remained open until it was tragically destroyed in a fire in 1982.

We have not restored this chair, but simply left it in the condition we found it. The covering is not original but looks to be 60s/70s and has a rustic, ‘shabby chic’ look. We’ll leave it up to you if you want to recover it!
